Links and Loves

Here’s a little round-up of things I’ve loved this week:

Lizz Lunney's Zine Unicorns

Free The Zine Unicorns: an amazing new comic about unicorn slavery from Lizz Lunney. She’ll be at the Alternative Press Festival in London this weekend. I’ll be popping in on Saturday, too!

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition news: After the rather dim Dawnguard and disappointing Diablo III, the prospect of going back to basics with the iPad release of Baldur’s Gate appeals. The story will be as dull and nonsensical as ever, but it’ll make a time-killer alternative to the embarrassing nonsense I’ve downloaded lately.

The Underwater Welder from Jeff Lemire: Beautiful new book from the creator of Essex County. An adult’s coming of age story chronicled with heart-rending vision, poise and grace.

Absolutely: The best thing about the Absolutely Fabulous special for the Olympics was the timely reminder to go and re-watch this series. Anarchic and grotesque in equal measure, few of the clones it spawned live up to its clever, strange humour.

Calbourne Water Mill: Look beyond the initial groan of font-arrogance you feel when looking at this site and you’ll see the key to a beautiful little gem on the Isle of Wight. I went recently and found unexploded bombs, vintage cars, rubber duck racing, a space rocket and some lovely flour. If that doesn’t persuade you, residents get a season pass with their ticket and they have good wifi in the cafe.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: Oliver Sacks’ collection of adventures in neurology remains a fascinating read.

Adobe Creative Cloud: Could an Adobe subscription (addiction?) service make Creative Suite financially accessible for more freelancers?

Aside from all of that, I enjoyed the very pleasant surprise that the Olympics Opening Ceremony included quite a hearty “fuck you” to those bent on dissolving the NHS and Britain’s creative industries. That sentiment led me to rant about policies targeting Trouble(d) Families which the lovely people at Bad Reputation published, which was a pleasant surprise.

Not a bad week! Enjoy your weekend!
